Physical Science

Prerequisite: Successful completion of General Science
Length of course: one semester
Number of credits: 1 Science credit
Course description: This course focuses on basic physics, covering such topics as motion, energy, simple machines, and various other physical phenomena existing within nature. Physical Science also develops a basic understanding of chemistry. Students participate in many lab experiments in order to better understand concepts, and, in the process, are expected to develop an understanding and appreciation for accurate measurement and record keeping and for the systematic approach that is used in discovery and inquiry.

Earth Science

Prerequisite: Successful completion of General Science
Length of course: one semester
Number of credits: 1 Science credit
Course description: This course focuses on basic geologic processes, beginning with the study of elements and minerals and progressing to the study of rocks and the forces of erosion; they are also introduced to oceanography and the effects of weather on the physical world. Students learn to analyze information from graphs, maps, and charts, and to draw appropriate conclusions. This course also helps develop an understanding of the geosphere and cycles. Students are expected to begin seeing relationships between living organisms, the environment, and earth’s resources.

Biology

Prerequisite: Successful completion of General Science
Length of course: one semester
Number of credits: 1 Science Credit
Course description: This course focuses on diversity of life, helping students develop an appreciation for the living world around them. Students learn to classify organisms and to understand the characteristics of the five kingdoms. Students also develop an understanding of the concept of balance in maintaining healthy ecosystems. Students study the various body systems including the digestive system, the respiratory system, the nervous system, and the circulatory system. Students also learn about the basic principles of heredity and genetics.

Geology

Prerequisite: Successful completion of General Science
Length of course: one semester
Number of credits: 1 Science credit
Course description: This course provides an in depth study of the forces that formed and continue to affect the earth’s surface. Earthquakes, volcanoes, and erosion are examples of topics that are presented.

Principles of Engineering

Prerequisite: Approval of instructor and site administrator
Length of course: one semester
Number of credits: 2 Science credit
Course description: This course is a college-prep course that requires attendance in a class along with additional independent work. Students are introduced to basic information critical to all engineering fields, including electrical, mechanical, civil, chemical, industrial, aerospace, and agricultural engineering. A hands-on project is required.
